Uncover the path from PCR to PLS via elastic component regression

a r t i c l e i n f o This contribution introduces Elastic Component Regression (ECR) as an explorative data analysis method that utilizes a tuning parameter α ∈ [0,1] to supervise the X-matrix decomposition. It is demonstrated theoretically that the elastic component resulting from ECR coincides with principal components of PCA when α = 0 and also coincides with PLS components when α = 1. In this context, PCR and PLS occupy the two ends of ECR and α ∈ (0,1) will lead to an infinite number of transitional models which collectively uncover the model path from PCR to PLS. Therefore, the framework of ECR shows a natural progression from PCR to PLS and may help add some insight into their relationships in theory. The performance of ECR is investigated on a series of simulated datasets together with a real world near infrared dataset. (The source codes implementing ECR in MATLAB are freely available at

The relation between breeding management and 305-day milk production, determined via principal components regression and partial least squares
A field study was set up to investigate the relation between breeding management and 305-day milk production. Second goal of the study was to investigate advantages and disadvantages of principal components regression (PCR) and partial least squares (PLS) for livestock management research. Multicollinearity was present in the data set and the number of variables was high compared to the number ...

It can be stated as a multivariate regression problem with ill-posed data. In this...
متن کاملDetermination of the Colorants in Various Samples by Chemometric Methods Using Statistical Chemistry
partial least square and principal component regression methods were applied to various mixtures of Allura Red and Brilliant Blue to determine the concentrations. Colorants, at the same time, were analyzed with UV-spectrophotometry in chemical separation. The obtained experimental data have been evaluated by chemometric methods as Partial Least Squares (PLS) and Principle Component Regressi...

Multivariate statistical methods including pattern recognition (Principal Component Analysis--PCA) and modeling (Multiple Linear Regression--MLR, Partial Least Squares--PLS, as well as Principal Component Regression--PCR) methods were carried out to evaluate the state of ambient air in Miskolc (second largest city in Hungary). Samples were taken from near the ground at a place with an extremely...
متن کاملNear Infrared Spectroscopy Calibration for Wood Chemistry: Which Chemometric Technique Is Best for Prediction and Interpretation?
This paper addresses the precision in factor loadings during partial least squares (PLS) and principal components regression (PCR) of wood chemistry content from near infrared reflectance (NIR) spectra. The precision of the loadings is considered important because these estimates are often utilized to interpret chemometric models or selection of meaningful wavenumbers. Standard laboratory chemi...
